This album of Sam "Lightnin'" Hopkins is unique in many ways. It is a well known fact that this artist has been recorded many times-all excellent as only he could be. However, in the past, Lightnin's recording sessions have been planned and ended up "studio dates". WIth this album, we took recording equipment to a night club ("The Bird Lounge") in Houston, Texas where he was performing live as a club entertainer. By doing this, we captured a Lightnin' seldom heard before. The songs, stories and feeling is spontaneous, alive and real. We hear this unusual artist in his natural surroundings which give a realism of his kind of music-down-home, heartfelt blues.
The time was 4:00 A.M and everyone was really in the mood. We recorded for hours and in the final selection of material for this album, chose the absolute best of ole' Sam.
In addition to a great recording, we were fortunate in that Sam posed for the cover in color. I think this is a first for any record album.
